A spent Falcon 9 rocket booster is crashing into the lunar surface tonight! Use this quick guide to help your family and friends spot the aftermath from Southern California.
When to Watch
- Date: Tuesday night, August 4, 2026
- Impact Time: 11:35 PM PDT (Sharp!)
- Target Window: Start tracking by 11:15 PM PDT to get oriented.
Where to Look
- Target: Near the Einstein Crater, located on the western limb (edge) of the Moon.
- Moon Phase: The Moon will be in its late gibbous phase, offering high contrast along the terminator line.
Equipment & Viewing Tips
- Naked Eye: Not visible.
- Binoculars: Might reveal the general area, but will not show the dust plume.
- Telescopes (Best): Use a 6-inch or larger telescope with medium-to-high magnification.
- What to Expect: Look for a tiny, brief pinpoint flash at 11:35 PM, followed by a faint, expanding plume of reflective dust kicked up against the dark space background.
