Partial Lunar Eclipse

A spectacular partial lunar eclipse highlights the night of August 27–28, offering skywatchers an excellent opportunity to witness Earth's shadow slowly sweep across the Moon. The eclipse begins with the subtle penumbral phase at 9:23 PM ET (6:23 PM PT), followed by the partial phase at 10:33 PM ET (7:33 PM PT) as the Moon starts to darken noticeably. Mid-eclipse occurs at 12:12 AM ET (9:12 PM PT), when approximately 93% of the Moon is immersed in Earth's shadow. Through a telescope, begin with a low-power eyepiece to frame the entire Moon, then switch to medium magnification to examine the dramatic boundary between the illuminated and shadowed regions, where craters, mountains, and maria appear with exceptional contrast. Near maximum eclipse, look for subtle copper, orange, or gray tones across the eclipsed portion while the remaining sunlit edge shines brightly. The Moon will be located in the constellation Aquarius, with the bright star Fomalhaut below it and Saturn rising in the east-northeast. The partial phase ends at 1:51 AM ET (10:51 PM PT), and the eclipse concludes with the end of the penumbral phase at 3:01 AM ET (12:01 AM PT).

The Perseid Meteor Shower

Every August, Earth passes through a trail of dust and debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, creating the annual Perseid meteor shower, one of the most reliable and spectacular meteor displays of the year. As tiny fragments of this ancient comet collide with Earth's atmosphere, they burn up in brilliant streaks of light that appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus.

The Perseids reach their peak overnight on August 12–13, with dark skies offering the potential to see 80 to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. This year’s New Moon on August 12 creates excellent viewing conditions by keeping the sky free from bright moonlight, allowing even the fainter meteors to shine through.

For the best experience, head outside after midnight when the radiant in Perseus climbs higher in the northeastern sky. Find a location away from city lights, allow your eyes time to adjust to the darkness, and look upward across the summer Milky Way as meteors streak across the sky. No telescope is needed—the wide field of view of your own eyes is the perfect tool for capturing this celestial display. Each meteor is a tiny piece of Comet Swift-Tuttle, offering a brief glimpse of material that has traveled through space for thousands of years before creating its final flash in Earth's atmosphere.

The Dumbbell Nebula

First observed by the renowned Charles Messier on July 12, 1764, the Dumbbell Nebula (M27) is one of the most famous and rewarding planetary nebulae in the night sky. Located in the constellation Vulpecula, it earned its name from its distinctive two-lobed shape, resembling a dumbbell floating among the stars. As the second brightest planetary nebula after the Helix Nebula, M27 stands out because of its high surface brightness, making it an excellent target for amateur astronomers and a favorite among visual observers.

Through a telescope, the Dumbbell Nebula appears as a glowing, oval-shaped cloud, with larger apertures revealing more detail and structure within its expanding shells of gas. A nebula filter can enhance its contrast, helping bring out the delicate shape and faint outer regions. Planetary nebulae like M27 offer a glimpse into the future of our own Sun. Billions of years from now, the Sun will shed its outer layers, creating a glowing shell of gas around its exposed core—much like the beautiful cosmic transformation we see in the Dumbbell Nebula today.
